As a student, in 1967, I decided to get my professional experience in a newspaper
that opposed Salazar's ruling. Portugal had serious difficulties and was mentally
and materially undeveloped. The colonial war made situation almost unbearable,
with the intensive emigration and a dictatorship sustained by censorship and political
police.
The experience in the "Republica" newspaper was a privilege. Moreover,
in order not to forget, here are the names of the people that due to their impartiality,
honour and verticality were important to my learning process: (journalists) Miguel
Serrano, Figueiredo Filipe, Afonso Cautela, Eduardo Valente da Fonseca, (writer)
Manuel de Fonseca, Marcelino Mesquita, and the directors of the newspaper Alfredo
Guisado and Carvalhão Duarte amongst others.
In order not to forget, also, the freedom-less times that we had, here are the
original samples of censured
articles by the censorship services of the dictators Oliveira Salazar and
Marcelo Caetano.
